The music education program at Chowan University is truly phenomenal. The small class size and individual attention made my experience more personal. A Music Education Degree from Chowan will prepare you to teach K-12 public school music as a:
- General Music Teacher in an Elementary School
- Band Director in a Middle or High School
- Choral Director in a Middle or High School
- Orchestra Director in a Middle or High School
You’ll have opportunities to sharpen your teaching skills in classes like these:
- Music Materials and Methods for the Elementary Grades
- Music Materials and Methods for the Secondary Grades
- Techniques classes in Voice, Brass Instruments, Woodwind Instruments, Stringed Instruments, and Percussion instruments
You’ll learn about Classroom Management, Educational Psychology, Multicultural Education, and more through the Professional Studies component of your degree.

You get plenty of opportunities to observe actual classroom teaching in area public schools throughout your course of study. And, at the conclusion of the program, you will spend 15 weeks in a Directed Student Teaching experience, where you will work one-on-one with a certified public school teacher in your discipline. Since 2005, we have had a 100% placement rate for our music education graduates!
