Education:
Professor Carolyn Phillips received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from East Carolina University. After that, she attended Indiana State University, where she received her Master of Fine Arts in Painting. Professor Phillips joined the faculty of Chowan University in 2008.

Courses Taught:
Sequential 2 - 2007 Spring
Team taught the entire junior class in collaboration with two other animation and film professionals. Students were divided into three sections during the 15-week course, exploring three time-based applications for graphic design, i.e. video, motion graphics and Flash animation for the web.
Imaging 1 - 2007 Fall - 2008 Fall - 2010 Fall
Taught one of the three sections of Imaging 1 offered by VCU’s Department of Graphic Design as a core curriculum course for sophomore-level graphic design students. The course investigated a variety of digital and hand-crafted methods of image making and design fundamentals as they relate to visual communication and the conceptual and visual relationships between type and image.
Imaging 2 - 2009 Spring - 2010 Spring - 2011 Spring
Taught this course on Imaging, which explored image making for entire systems of applications and platforms, from print media to environmental graphics. The students’ ability to draw imagery was tested as they studied design methods and processes, semiotics and logo development.

Taught a diverse range of students from various departments in VCU’s School of the Arts at all grade levels. The course provided students the ability to learn, in a step-by-step process, design principles and typography fundamentals, and the human-centered usability and navigation guidelines. Focus was placed on learning the syntax of ActionScript 3.0, HTML and CSS, which gave students the ability to read and write web programming languages for their web design projects.
Design Technology 1 - 2010 Fall
Taught a 15-week course introducing first-year graphic design students to the Adobe CS5 suite software package used for developing a variety of print design solutions. Focus was placed on using Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign in an accurate and quick manner for effective project workflow. Students were taught how to organize and manage files for their introduction to project management. With each project, the students were introduced to a variety of typography- and imagery-making principles for visual communication purposes.
Two Dimensional Design - 2010 Fall
Taught a freshman-based course wherein students learned fundamental visual principles as they relate to all kinds of art and design. Each project improved the students’ ability to develop strong compositions by understanding visual form, depth, shape, line, color and texture. Students also gained key awareness of the visual relationship between elements within each composition they developed. The course also helped students gain better craftsmanship, as they completed each project by hand.

The New Big Book of Layouts - 2010
The print material to promote the Virginia Center of Architecture’s “Green Your Scene” and Thinkhaus’ 2008 holiday card were both selected for inclusion in the internationally published book “The New Big Book of Layouts” produced by HarperCollins Publishers.
Logolicious - 2010
Thinkhaus logo designs for Boathouse Living and Wordplay are featured in “Logolicious,” a book regarding logo design, branding and merchandising. The book was written by Peleg Top and published by HarperCollins Publishers.
Big Book of Green Design - 2009
Design work for the James River Green Building Council (JRGBC) was recognized and published internationally in “Big Book of Green Design,” authored by Anthony and Suzanna Stephens, and published by Harper Collins Publishers. Authors received over 2,000 design submissions for the book and only 230 pieces were selected.
Style Weekly Top 40 Under 40 - 2009
Selected to the 2009 Style Weekly’s Top 40 Under 40 class as one of Richmond’s young professionals making a difference in the community. Each year, Style Weekly—Richmond’s alternative news publication for spotlighting the city’s culture, arts, opinions and creative thought—selects a class of 40 young professionals under the age of 40 as people to watch based on their ongoing activities in their businesses, organizations, and communities.
Visual 100s, Logos and Letterheads - 2008
Logo work for The Wright Real Estate Company and The Conciliation Project were recognized and published internationally in “Visual 100s, Logos and Letterheads,” authored by Matt Woolman/PLAID Studios published by Angela Patchell Books, Ltd.
