MURFREESBORO, NC – Chowan University is proud to welcome the newest member of the university’s Campus Ministry Team, Rev. Drew Phillips, as the Associate Campus Minister to the University. Phillips comes to Chowan after serving as the Chaplain at the Christian Activity Center (CAC) in East St. Louis, IL, a regular partner with Chowan for summer mission trip experience, where he was CBF Field Personnel.
“In that role I oversaw the spiritual component of our after school and summer program for children ages 5-18,” Phillips explained. “In addition, I am the founding pastor of the CAC Friendly Baptist Church, a worship service which arose organically out of our community.”
“Rev. Phillips is coming to Chowan with years of ministry experience in a non-traditional setting filled with challenges of poverty, broken family systems, and failed community promises. Drew sees beyond those imposing realities to the heart of the people,” stated Minister to the University Rev. Mari Wiles. “I look forward to a strong ministry team with Drew. He will quickly fit in here as he engages our campus to be more like Jesus. He is a gifted preacher, curious scholar and truly loves the people of God.”
With undergraduate degrees from North Central Missouri College and Missouri Western State University, Phillips earned his Master of Divinity degree from here in North Carolina at Campbell University Divinity School. Phillips was first licensed to preach in January of 2001 through First Baptist Church in Chillicothe, MO and was ordained in June of 2004 at Winstanley Baptist Church in Fairview Heights, IL, where he also served as youth minister. Phillips now looks forward to working with college-age students in his new role at Chowan.
“Young adults are at a crucial place, discovering their worlds and determining how they will participate in them,” Phillips noted. “College is the perfect time to challenge and affirm, to expand what they think they know about the big ideas.”
“I feel that my gifts and experience match the needs and expectations of campus ministry at Chowan,” Phillips added. “I believe the minister in a college community is a spiritual director of sorts, pointing out the always present, rarely obvious, often surprising God.”
