MURFREESBORO, NC – As a symbol of celebration for a decade of bold leadership and ambitious achievement, the Great State of North Carolina awarded Chowan University’s president Dr. M. Christopher White with one of the state’s highest honors, the Order of the Long Leaf Pine. Vice President of Development at Chowan University John Tayloe delivered the honor on behalf of the Governor of North Carolina, Pat McCrory.
At a formal gathering on the historic campus on September 13th, Eastern Representative for the United States Senator Richard Burr, Betty Jo Shepheard, helped to make the official award presentation to Dr. White with Tayloe.
The unknowing and somewhat surprised college president was there to unveil a book honoring his noteworthy administration’s achievements – a 75% increase in enrollment over the past 10 years, $30 million in campus construction and upgrades while simultaneously significantly lowering the institution’s debt, and growing to include travel abroad, an Honors College and a Masters degree program, just to name a few. Largely written and edited by White himself, the new book sums up the advances that the then-college, which became a university under the approval of his administration, accomplished during his decade, appropriately entitled The Renaissance of Chowan University 2003-2013.
Dr. White’s extraordinary service to Chowan, eastern North Carolina and the state as a whole is a proven record of extra effort and an enthusiastic approach to higher education. A hands-on and all-inclusive style of leadership revived the Chowan community and the 165-year-old campus. A passion for the students’ success and an ideal of innovation has grown his university into the fastest growing private institution in the state, and a proud iconic landmark for the northeast region as well.
Dr. White now joins the ranks of other notable North Carolina recipients of the prestigious Order of the Long Leaf Pine such as Michael Jordan, Andy Griffith, Billy Graham and others honored by the Governor of North Carolina with the rank of Ambassador Extraordinary, also conferred upon receipt of the ceremonious certificate.
Congratulations to Dr. White for this well-deserved honor.
