University Relations - September 19, 2013
MURFREESBORO, NC – Chowan University’s President and First Lady, Dr. Christopher and Linda White received the Spirit of Chowan Awards on Wednesday, September 11th. Only the sixth and seventh awards to ever be conferred in the school’s 165 year history, the esteemed awards were presented during Academic and Founders’ Day Convocation.
The Spirit of Chowan Award was conceived by a thoughtful member of the Chowan University Board of Trustees and is intended to honor extraordinary individuals who so embody the heart and soul of the university that they warrant recognition by the university community. This may be a student, faculty, staff member, or friend of the university who has overcome significant adversity; who has displayed the characteristics of a servant in the model of Christ; who has remained committed to the mission of the university and his or her personal relationship with God; or who has embodied the spirit of the history, mission and perseverance of the university.
Appointed the twenty-second president of Chowan in 2003, the first ten years of Chris White’s presidency have been marked by exceptional innovation, achievement and unrivaled institutional growth. He has provided leadership for a major transformation in finances, academic affairs, athletics, residential living, fundraising, and enrollment management.
This remarkable transformation is the result of White’s passion for Christian higher education, love of Chowan, and extraordinary vision. Under President White’s leadership, Chowan has reaffirmed its founding values; strengthened its stature in the community and region; enhanced its academic offerings, including the addition of graduate program and Honors College; increased the number of faculty holding terminal degrees from 49 to 70%; witnessed a physical transformation with more than $30 million in new facilities and renovations, including Whites Crossing; increased enrollment by 75%, from 779 students to 1,367; improved the competitiveness of intercollegiate athletic programs while moving from NCAA Division III to Division II; made a transition from college to university status; invigorated student life and campus ministry programs; witnessed a sharp rise in private donations and the dramatic growth of its endowment; and enhanced the culture of caring at Chowan, which included the founding of the Chowan Christian Service Association.
Since joining the Chowan family in 2003, Linda White, who embodies the Chowan spirit of perseverance, dedication, and excellence, has made it her cause to serve God, her family, and Chowan in ways that glorify the Lord and bring honor, happiness, and beauty to those around her and to our campus. She has excelled in managing and hosting a complex array of events, all with the goal of building campus community. From planning, to designing, to welcoming, no job is too large or too small for her and her very high standards. Her greatest contribution to Chowan has been making campus facilities more attractive for students. Through her leadership and talents, she has influenced many projects to beautify the campus. These renovation projects have aided the everyday life of Chowan students. Her creative touch can be found in almost every building, including Belk, Jenkins, Marks, Penny, Green, Daniel, the Columns, and so on. She has fulfilled this role while maintaining a keen sense of just what one could accomplish in terms of quality and often limited resources.
Congratulations to Dr. and Mrs. White for earning the Spirit of Chowan honor!
