Dr. Todd Still to Speak at Chowan University’s
Religious Heritage Lectures
September 28, 2011
MURFREESBORO, NC – Join Chowan University on October 3rd and 5th at 11:00 am in Turner Auditorium for the annual Taylor Religious Heritage Lecture Series, featuring this year’s special guest speaker Dr. Todd Still. Established in 1994 by Dr. and Mrs. Hargus Taylor, the lecture series provides strong Christian role models for generations of Chowan students and community members.
Dr. Todd Still serves as Professor of Christian Scriptures in the George W. Truett Theological Seminary of Baylor University in Waco, Texas where he specializes in New Testament Interpretations. Holding a Bachelor of Arts in Greek and sociology from Baylor, a Master of Divinity in Biblical Languages from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and a Doctorate of Philosophy from the University of Glasgow in Scotland, Still is author of one technical monograph, three commentaries and numerous articles, reviews and Bible Study materials.
Presently, Still is under contract to write a guide to the Thessalonian Letters, a book on Paul with Bruce W. Longenecker, and a companion to Pauline Interpretations, as well as being commissioned to write commentaries on 1-2 Thessalonians and 1 Peter. A licensed and ordained Baptist Minister, he has had the opportunity to preach and teach in many congregational and conference settings, and has served in a variety of ministry capacities including church custodian, music minister, youth minister, college minister, education minister, pastor and interim pastor.
Still’s first topic for Monday morning’s Religious Heritage Lecture will be entitled “Why Did Paul Preach Christ Crucified Among the Corinthians?: A New Answer to an Old Question”. The second presentation on Wednesday at 11:00 am will be a sermon entitled “Where is the Power?”
“I’ll probe Paul’s proclamation of Christ crucified and seek to reflect theologically and pastorally upon 1 Corinthians 1:18-2:5,” Still added. “So the lecture and sermon then go together. In the lecture, I am asking what prompted Paul to preach Christ Crucified, and in the sermon, I am exploring the meaning of this message, the contours of this proclamation as I, too, seek to preach Christ crucified.”
In addition to the Taylor Religious Heritage Lectures, Dr. Todd Still will also be teaching a special Sunday School class in the Fellowship Hall of Murfreesboro Baptist Church on Sunday, October 2nd at 10:00 am. Still will also be the featured guest speaker at Chowan University’s Fall Dinner Meeting of the Chowan Christian Service Association scheduled for Tuesday, October 4th in the Chowan Room of Thomas Dining Hall. The cost of the meal is $10 per person and please send your RSVP to Joyce Futrell at firstname.lastname@example.org or (252) 398-6234.
