Hawks Tame Mustangs 98-67 in Home Season Opener
Box Score MURFREESBORO- The Chowan University men's basketball team opened the 2016-17 season with a 98-67 win over Mid-Atlantic Christian University on Wednesday evening. The Hawks start the year with a 1-0 record while the Mustangs slide to 1-3 on the year with the setback.
Dixon Ogwo led the effort for Mid-Atlantic Christian with 10 points in the setback. Jeston Thompson added nine points in the loss with Joseph Hill notching seven points.
The Hawks had five players score double digit points in Wednesday's win. Marco Haskins led all players in the game with 19 points followed by Robert Grubbs with 17 points. Kevin Kuteyi recorded 14 points for the Chowan Blue and White with Tim Hewett and Jeremy Smith notching 13 points and 12 points, respectively. Smith notched a game-high seven rebounds (one offensive, six defensive).
Chowan took control right from the start, racing to a 17-3 lead within the first five minutes of the contest. The Mustangs pulled within six points (26-20) at the 9:03 mark after a three-pointer by Jeston Thompson, but the Hawks promptly answered back with a 10-0 run to extend their lead to 36-20 with 7:08 on the clock. Chowan led by as many as 35 points (65-30) before heading into halftime with a 65-32 lead.
The Hawks continued to build on the momentum in the second half. Chowan maintained a lead of 28 or more points for the remainder of the contest before closing out the game with a commanding 98-67 victory.
The Hawks hit the road on Thursday to square off against Hampton University in exhibition play. Tip-off is slated for 6pm.
