Alan Scott Selected to Oversee Title IX at Chowan University

I am excited about this new role that I have accepted. I look forward to continuing to serve the Chowan community in both roles to the best of my abilities.

Alan Scott joined Chowan University in 2014 as the Assistant Director of Residence Life - Careers and Programs. His primary role was to assist students and alumni as they work to meet their professional and career goals. Scott shared that “Career Services is an important part of one’s full college experience.”

Through his tenure at the University, he has become a valued colleague and a respected staff member by countless students. When the time came that the University needed to identify a new Title IX Coordinator, there was an obvious choice.

In July 2020, Alan Scott assumed the role of Title IX Coordinator. In this role, he is tasked with ensuring the University complies with Title IX policies and regulations. “As the Title IX Coordinator, I would like to support and guide students through any Title IX issues,” shared Scott. “I am excited about this new role that I have accepted. I look forward to continuing to serve the Chowan community in both roles to the best of my abilities.”

Alan Scott can be reached via email at scotta1@chowan.edu or via phone at 252-398-6437. His office, number 212, is located in Robert Marks Hall.

About Title IX

Chowan University strives to provide an environment that is fully conducive to learning and intellectual pursuit within a Christian context. The University, therefore, condemns all forms of sexual discrimination as being inconsistent with its mission. Chowan University, as a Christian institution of higher education, affirms its moral commitment to the dignity and worth of all individuals.

Title IX of the Education Amendment of 1972 states that “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.” Sexual violence and harassment are forms of discrimination prohibited by Title IX.

Chowan’s policies prohibiting sexual violence and sexual harassment (“sexual misconduct”) are not only legal responsibilities with practical applicability, they stem from the University’s historical and continuing commitment to Christian and moral values. Chowan University takes seriously every allegation or report of sexual misconduct it receives. The University’s response is intended to assure that all parties involved are treated fairly, that victims receive appropriate support, and that allegations of sexual misconduct are handled in a prompt, thorough and equitable manner.
