I attended Chowan University as a non-traditional, transfer student. Chowan gave me the opportunity to fulfill a dream and be an example to my children, by becoming a college graduate. By offering me a position after graduation in the Chowan Financial Aid Office, and now in the Chowan Admissions Office, the university has also helped me build a career. Once you spend time at Chowan, you will understand what it means when we say, “come be part of the Chowan family."
Advice from Nancy: College will be a time of personal and educational growth. You will likely create friendships that will last a lifetime. Just remember to take a chance, ask lots of questions, and be willing to try new things.
Favorite spot on campus: My favorite spot on campus as a student, was Whitaker Library. As an English major, I was often comforted and inspired when surrounded by books. I spent many hours researching, studying, or doing group projects. The library’s staff is also very helpful in assisting students with the resources needed to become successful scholars.
Favorite Chowan moment: Graduation day is my favorite Chowan moment. I worked extremely hard to be an honor graduate, which was a dream I once thought unobtainable. I will never forget the moment I walked across the stage, with a huge grin on my face, and was handed my diploma by Dr. Christopher White.
Favorite college memory: My favorite college memory is having my poetry published in the first edition of Chowan’s “The Brown Lady” academic publication. I also had the pleasure of sharing my poetry at the reception for the release of the magazine. Chowan gave me many opportunities to share my literary work, which helped me grow as a writer and public speaker.
